As many of you are probably aware, Tropical Storm Debby is currently spinning away in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico... giving those of us in the satellite business a perfect day for a photo shoot! Shown below is the 1615 UTC images of Cloud Top Height, Cloud Top Temperature, and Cloud Thickness. The thicker and colder cloud tops generally outline the most intense rain bands associated with the storm. Also, note the thicker clouds (in the dark blues and purples) associated with these bands and particularly within the eye wall.
From an aviation standpoint this thing hasn't caused too much of a headache thus far. As it is currently situated mostly over the Gulf, the traffic constrains haven't been overly significant, with only a few flight routes being diverted around the worst of the convection. However, note that despite the relatively low cloud top heights, flights have also avoided flying directly over the eye of the storm.This is most likely to avoid the turbulence associated with the tight wind gradient between the eye and eyewall.

Also, check out the Low Cloud and Fog IFR probability from 0400 UTC this morning. The algorithm did a good job picking up on the low ceilings associated with the eyewall and more intense rainbands, as well as the clear area within the eye.
