Day 1: Ceiling and Vis verification

Recall yesterday's 6hr and 9hr forecasts for ceiling and visibility, as well as the simulated satellite imagery:

20130211 Synthetic ABI band difference forecast for 20130212 0300 UTC
20130211 Synthetic ABI band difference forecast for 20130212 0600 UTC

Now check out the GOES-R FLS product and observed ceilings at 0300 UTC and 0600 UTC this morning:
20130212 0245 FLS, observed ceilings and the 0300 UTC C&V forecast
20130212 0545 FLS, observed ceilings and the ~0600 UTC C&V forecast
While the synthetic imagery did tend to overdo the stratus layer, particularly in western Texas, it did a fairly good job of identifying the areas in which it would form. Additionally, the FLS product was able to quite accurately identify the low ceilings not only in Texas, but also into the Northeast.
