SRSOR 1-minute imagery and Atlantic flight routes

Today has been another quiet weather day with the exception of the ongoing convection over the SE U.S. As such, all of our experimental desks have been monitoring this area. Shown below 1-minute visible imagery from GOES-14 overlaid with the ASDI flight routes and GLD 10-minute lightning density.

Note in particular the flight routes between the Northeast and Miami. Generally these flights will fly the AR routes, or routes that travel past Wilmington, NC and down to Miami via the Atlantic Ocean. However, on this particular morning there have been several areas of ongoing and strengthening convective cells, resulting in the FAA routing the majority of these flights onshore. Watch as the intensities in the GLD increase in the cells just off the coast of the Carolinas and subsequently as flights begin to move slowly back offshore as those cells drift east.

Also take a look at Atlanta Center. There is some embedded convection with this activity but no or very marginal lightning activity allowing for traffic to get in and out with no delays and only minor turbulence reported. Also, with the onshore divert routes relatively clear there have been no delays along the East Coast thus far either.
