AWT Winter Experiment 2016

Today marks the first day of the 2016 Winter Experiment at the Aviation Weather Testbed. We will be focusing on icing, turbulence, and cloud & visibility concepts in a series of mock operational environments. This first week will be internal only and include AWC forecasters. On February 22nd, we will open up to external guests and a wider audience as well FAA collaboration.

On the GOES-R side of the house there will be a number of products evaluated throughout this demonstration, several of the new and/or improved from the previous winter experiment. The suite of GOES-R icing algorithms from NASA LaRC includes an icing threat index as well as estimates of both the base and height of the icing layer.

The satellite-derived ceiling height is a new algorithm created within the ACHA Cloud Height suite of products.
