A Cloudy Proposition: the GOES-R PG in the C&V effort at the AWT

Today marks the first day of the 2016 Summer Experiment at the Aviation Weather Testbed. This year a large portion of the experiment is dedicated to the Digital Aviation Services effort, specifically ceiling and visibility (C&V) forecasts in AWIPS-2 GFE.

You may be wondering... how does an effort heavily involving grid editing and model guidance utilize satellite?

The answer lies in the initial stages of grid editing. During SE16, the first forecast product is issued for four hours out and continues well beyond that. Model data like the NAM Nest, GLAMP, etc. are used. However, forecasters emphasize the fact that it is important to keep your basis in reality. If the initial hours in the model are skewed from what current satellite imagery or other observations are showing, it is likely that something is amiss within the model and will continue to be inaccurate in the later hours of the model. This is particularly true in areas subject to complex terrain or other unique mesoscale climates. Forecasters can use satellite and other observations to edit these particular areas in their C&V grids.

An inherent challenge here is the grid editing platform. Currently D2D is utilized as the display GUI for various observations (satellite, radar, etc.), while GFE is designed only grids. For a smoother grid editing process, having satellite imagery within GFE would be extremely useful. This functionality exists, but more detailed evaluation is necessary to determine exactly how to make it better. Part of this year's experiment will not only be the display and evaluation of satellite imagery in the D2D GUI, but also exploration of the satellite data functionality in GFE for the grid editing process.
