Another part of the 2016 experiment revolves around the ever changing N-AWIPS to AWIPS-2 transition. Currently AWC operations is currently on legacy N-AWIPS systems and in an effort to maintain our mission to provide innovative and accurate aviation forecasts, there has been much work to carve out a pathway for our future. One such pathway is the use of Hazard Services as a production platform for Convective SIGMET issuance on D2D.

By and large a lot of this is new knobology; i.e. getting forecasters familiar with the new platform and making sure the platform itself is accurate. However, a part of this is making sure the forecasters have available the current tools in N-AWIPS. For the experiment, all GOES-R Proving Ground convective tools were transitioned into D2D for evaluation. With more flexibility in AWIPS-2, the potential for product improvement is high. Additionally, it allows forecasters to become accustomed to product locations and product usability as the develop new procedures for issuing their Convective SIGMETs.
