Day 7: Icing verification from Day 6

Yesterday the main focus at the icing desk was the low moving over the Great Lakes area and the associated warm front feature along the East Coast of the U.S. Of particular interest was area from VA northeastward up the coast to southern New England.

Show below is the 20130219 2045 UTC Flight Icing Threat and the 2100 UTC light and above icing PIREPs, both overlaid with the 2100 UTC icing AIRMET. Note the red areas in the FIT indicating a higher probability of moderate or greater icing and the large number of icing PIREPs that confirm the presence of an icing layer.

In addition, check out the 2045 UTC SLD image below, also overlaid with the 2100 UTC icing AIRMETs and icing PIREP reports. The yellows and oranges indicate a higher probability of large supercooled droplets (up to 25 um or greater) and indicate the potential for icing conditions. Note again the large number of icing PIREPs in the area along the coast of VA up to NY that corroborate the presence of an icing layer.
